Love is in the air!

Love is in the air! Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone. Did you know mid-February love was celebrated back as far as Roman times. While the oldest known Valentine card was sent in the 1400’s from the Tower of London, the tradition of sending cards to those we love on the 14th didn’t become popular until the 17th century. Richard Cadbury marketed the first box of chocolates in 1868 (with that name are you surprised?). And Valentine cards haven’t always been nice. Vinegar valentines carrying insulting messages became popular in the 1800’s.

“Be Mine” was in the first issue of Necco Sweethearts. If you like Sweethearts, you have two options. Real Simple magazine says you can sand off the message and write your own with a food grade food-color pen. Or if you’d like a virtual Necco,

We are the favorite!

Southern Living readers have shown how much they love us. This year’s survey of the best shows Charleston is the Favorite Southern City. Who would know better! We need to be careful though, sister-city Savannah crept up to the number two spot with Atlanta coming in third. Four of Savannah’s restaurants were also profiled in the same issue. Hyman’s Restaurant was slotted second in Seafood Restaurants. Wade’s in Spartanburg came in second to Lady and Son in Savannah in the Family Restaurant circuit. Myrtle Beach fared well in the poll, coming in second in the Beach Town/Resort category, as well as, the Family Vacation section. Beaufort was praised as the Top Small Town. All in all our state was represented well, but the shopping category was surprising. Charleston came in third behind Atlanta and Pigeon Ford, TN. It seems an odd grouping.

Tax Season Looms

Tax season is kicking into high gear and with it comes a warning about rapid returns from SC Consumer Affairs. These are loans with fees ranging $20-120. If you do not get the entire amount refunded, you must pay the remainder of the loan at high rates. Consumers making less than $50,000 a year can file their returns free online and E-File will speed refunds especially if you have direct deposit to your savings or checking account.
If that stresses you out too much the Center for Women is offering a stress release workshop on the 7th.

SCANA ranked third in overall customer service among 180 gas marketers across the country. Companies were rated on 26 attributes in five categories: customer service, operations, products and services, company reputation and pricing. While we’re applauding, MUSC Children’s Emergency Department has been rated as the ninth best pediatric emergency care facility in America by Child Magazine. The Children’s Hospital received an overall rank of 28. Last but not least, if you’re heading out to celebrate any of these successes, the Pavilion Bar and Café on Meeting Street was the only S.C. bar to make the Oxford Publishing Editor’s Choice Top 100 bars and clubs in the United States. Rankings are in no order, making the list is all that matters.

McCrady's on Weekend Getaway

McCrady’s will be featured on the Food Network's new “Giada’s Weekend Getaways” airing on Friday evenings at 9:30. The restaurant has recently returned the Long Room to the beauty of its 18th century origins and should be unveiling the “new” Lounge and Wine Bar in the early spring. And CSO was recently the beneficiary of a major donation from the owners.

Sounds dreamy...

Shoppers at Piggly Wiggly will soon be able to assemble meals through the new Dream Dinners program as well as shop for groceries. Debuting in Columbia in early 2007, you arrive at the store, assemble the meals from precut and measured ingredients into freezer containers and thaw and cook as needed from home. Sounds easy!

What is on the menu...

Marine Cuisine is the catch of the day at the SC Aquarium. Ever wondered what a jellyfish eats? From January through April, the aquarium will be showcasing the eating habits of their 7,000 “diners.” They have also removed the popular anaconda from the Secrets of the Amazon exhibit. It was weighed and measured to see how it fared during its two year visit. It will be quarantined and returned to display at the Riverbanks Zoo in April. Boa constrictors will take its place.

We know that South Carolina is a special place but it seems that the secret has gotten out. United Van Lines has just released its 2006 study tracking its customer’s moving trends. Judging by the traffic, it’s true: S.C. posted the third highest inbound moving rate in the U.S. with 60.6% of their moving traffic heading here. North Carolina got top honors with 64% and Oregon 62.5%. It’s no surprise to anyone living in this part of the country that you’ll be saying hello to a lot of Central Northeast refugees.

Go, Go Google

Looks like Lenoir, N.C. won the Google fight. Our northern neighbor gave them a $100 million tax break to get the giant to purchase a 215 acre parcel. Phase I will place a building housing servers on the property, Phase II will bring in 65-100 employees. Google was just named the US #1 employer.

Tennis Anyone?

The Family Circle Cup will be held April 7-15th on Daniel Island. #1 Justine Henin-Hardenne, #3 Amelie Mauresmo and #7 Martina Hingis all plan to attend. This is the first time the players, who have all held the #1 world designation, have met in the Daniel Island facility. Also, we’ll know soon what the new official drink will be for the Cup. Competitors had a January 31st deadline to come up with a concoction that captured the essence of Charleston. Cheers!
