2nd Annual Half Rubber Tourney Scheduled

If half rubber is your passion the 2nd Annual Half Rubber Tournament starts September 23rd at Park West. Teams must consist of 3-4 players ages 16 and older.

National Skills Competition

The Local Pepsi PUNT, PASS AND KICK Competition, a national skills competition for boys and girls ages 8-15, will take place at the Old Wando High School Sept. 16th.

Hoops Academy This Month

The Mt Pleasant Basketball Skills Academy for ages 9-16 will take place this month at Moultrie Middle. The instructional program will focus on offensive fundamentals, shooting techniques, scoring skills and speed-power-agility training.

Volunteers Wanted

The Palmetto Pride Classic, a Nationwide Tour event is coming to Daniel Island October 16. This first year will see a junior clinic on Tuesday and a pro-am event on Wednesday. The Classic is the next to last full field event of the 2006 Nationwide Tour season. The tournament will offer a $500,000 purse with the winner taking home $90,000. The tournament planners need approximately 700 volunteers to make it work. Volunteers will receive passes, shirts, a hat and meals during their shifts.

Museum Unveils New Exhibit

KIDSTORY, a permanent interactive children’s exhibit will have its Grand Opening celebration at the Charleston Museum on September 16th. Four fictional child guides will take youngsters on an exploration of natural discoveries, lighthouses, the port, stories of the Lowcountry and the life of a colonial child.

Fall Workshops

Old Santee Canal Park explores our past with hands-on workshops this fall. September 9th and 10th, the Berkeley Museum Antique Tractor and Engine Show will bring together 3 major area associations for a great weekend of shows, competitions and even an auction. Learn to weave a replica of an early American basket on September 25th or carve a walking stick in November.

Artists and Musicians Abound at Chazzfest

Chazzfest will take over the Family Circle Tennis Center on the 15th and 16th showcasing the likes of Al Green, Buddy Guy, Drive By Truckers, The Drifters and Drink Small. The Heritage Artisans Expo will display the work of regional artists on the festival grounds. Even the food and beverage available will be regional in flavor.

Fall Candlelight Tours Slated to Begin in September

The 30th Annual Candlelight Tour of Houses and Gardens will begin September 21 and run through October. The houses vary on each tour which is self paced and self guided. There are guides at the homes to point out interesting information on each of the eight to ten homes.

Charleston Garden Festival in Bloom

The Charleston Garden Festival at Middleton Place will open the “Fantasy in the Garden...Gardening with Wit and Wisdom” show October 19. The displays will run from whimsical to practical, so there will be something to interest every taste. The slate of activities scheduled for the festival includes demonstrations, seminars, tours of private downtown gardens, lectures by internationally renowned garden speakers and a tea in the garden. Middleton Place is also continuing the Rice Walk tours through September.

9th Annual CSO Island House Tour

Fall is a great time to tour Charleston and there are some tours and festivals coming up that sound like a great way to enjoy the cooler weather. The Charleston Symphony will host the Ninth Annual Island House Tour on Kiawah. Five private homers will be open on November 4th.

Carolina Food Pros will host the first ever Halloween Culinary Tour on October 28th. Geared for little witches and ghosts and their parents, the tour will sweeten the taste buds while walking through some of the city’s spookiest culinary spots.

Local Restaurant Featured

The Food Network was in town last week shooting at Charleston’s Bookstore Café. They recently moved from upper King Street to 1039 Anna Knapp Blvd. in Mt Pleasant. The network is debuting a new show called the “Hungry Detective.” The show featured the staff preparing and serving breakfast dishes that have long satisfied locals. Look for it in November.

Largest Annual Cook-Off in US coming to Charleston

If you just can’t wait, the Southern Living Cook-Off 2006, the largest annual cook-off in America will be held in October. Our new state-of-the-art facility, the Culinary Institute of Charleston will handle all of the preliminary rounds with the winners announced on October 5 during the Grand finale at Gaillard Auditorium. The finalists will demonstrate their entries in front of a live audience.

BB&T and Charleston Magazine to Sponsor Festival

The buzz is big on the Charleston Food and Wine Festival to be held in March ‘07. BB&T has stepped in as the festival sponsor in partnership with Charleston Magazine. The fete begins with a Salute to Charleston Chefs. Marion Square will be the site for the Charleston Cooks! Culinary Village and festival HQ. Events will be held around town including a Kids Culinary Village for children under 12, featuring cooking lessons. To kick things off there is an official poster contest open to residents of Charleston, Berkley or Dorchester counties. But hurry: contest deadline is Sept.15th.

Coming Soon to the Gibbes Art Gallery...

The Gibbes has a new exhibit called America at Work:WPA Prints representing the government’s attempt to revitalize the country during the depression. Two interesting exhibits coming up are Barbar’s Museum of Art showcasing the original watercolors that grace the charming children’s books. Also Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats beginning in October features 30 photographs each telling a poignant story. Speaking of photographs, renowned photographer, Brownie Harris will unveil a 70 piece collection this fall at the Market Pavilion Hotel downtown.

Charleston Receives Top Honors

Charleston has been rated in the top five art destinations among smaller cities by American Style magazine which focuses on art, interior design, travel and fine crafts. Top honors went to Santa Fe, then Asheville, Corning,NY, Charleston and coming in fifth, Sedonna, AZ.

If you’re on Sullivan’s Island, the Aquarium staff is teaching the ins and outs of throwing a cast net on the 30th. “What’s in Your Net” will help maximize your catch. Sounds tasty. The Aquarium will also host an “Under the Sea” art exhibit starting the 21st.

Beach and Swamp Sweep Weekend

September is a month to hold your breath in the Lowcountry. We got through some wet weeks and Ernesto, let’s just hope that’ll be the end of it. We have such a beautiful home, help keep it that way by joining the Sept 16th Beach Sweep. Old Santee Canal Park will join in with their Swamp Sweep. Find your favorite stretch of beach, creek, marsh or swamp and do your part to keep it beautiful.
