April in Charleston - Google is Coming!
Halfway between the pranksters of April Fool’s Day, the soreness of the Bridge Run and the sadness of tax day on the 15th comes the joy of Easter. In amongst the dyed eggs and chocolate bunnies, the first annual Good Friday Festival will be held in Liberty Square near the Aquarium 10 am-9 pm.
St. Andrew’s Church will celebrate with services at Boone Hall Plantation at 9 am. If you’d like to combine gorgeous spring flowers with brunch, try Middleton Place.
The Charleston Museum will open a year long exhibit Clothes to Dye For: Colorful Textiles from the Museum collection on May 18th. SC Archeology Month will be marked by a mock dig at the Dill Sanctuary April 14th.
From past to present, the spring tour of the Historic Pineland Village at Pinopolis will take place on the 21st with 17 historic homes and churches open to the public, as well as Wampee Plantation. On the 13th Kiawah Island will throw open the gates for the sixth Art and House Tour.
The Children’s Museum will host the third FAM JAM on the afternoon of the 21st. The Imagination Movers fresh from signing with Disney for a TV show, will be the concert guests.
BAM, it’s time to spice up your life with Zydeco, Cajun and Creole food at the 16th Annual Lowcountry Cajun Festival at the James Island County Park. It’s no fooling, the April 1st celebration will allow you to indulge in huge flavors of jambalaya, etouffe, andouille sausage, alligator and fresh steaming crawfish. Lowcountry favorites like BBQ and red rice will also be there. It’s billed as full-bellied fun for the whole family.
If you spot a logo on the next produce you buy that reads “S.C. Certified Grown” you’ll be seeing the result of the S.C. Agriculture Department’s new branding campaign. Launching on May 22nd, the campaign is trying to boost awareness of products grown in our state.
The shrimping industry is certifying “Wild American Shrimp” as an obvious way to let consumers know they are eating shrimp that not only taste better because of their natural diet, but are better for you.
Mike Lata of FIG has been nominated by the James Beard Foundation for Best Chef and the Lee Brothers with their Southern Cookbook are awash in nominations too. All winners will be announced in May. Jeremiah Bacon is back in his hometown, returning from the NYC restaurant scene to take the reins at Carolina’s as Executive Chef.
Anthony Bourdain brought his No Reservations film crew to the area. The local segments will air in September. The fare tested was from TW Graham’s in McClellanville to Jestine’s Kitchen, Hominy Grill and the Lee Brother’s’ real oyster roast on Edisto Island.
Six photographers were asked to find 10 faces each to represent the first installment in the Palmetto Portraits Project, on display at M.U.S.C. The project aims to humanize the four million residents of SC who put their health into the students’ hands. Local photographers Jack Alterman, Nancy Santos, Mark Sloan and Michelle Van Parys took part in the exhibition.
The Charleston Symphony Orchestra League presents the 30th edition of their Designer Showhouse until the 15th. The 8,000 square foot space at 103 Bull Street has been transformed by ASID members into intriguing spaces for living unheard of in 1853 when the home was built.
Tickets go on sale on the 7th for Chazzfest, Charleston’s celebration of its musical heritage. The headliners this year are Branford Marsalis, Kool and the Gang, Galactic, Toots &The Maytals. The festival takes place Saturday, Sept 22nd at the Family Circle Tennis Center. An auspicious date to be bringing a New Orleans native to the Holy City.
Venus Williams has announced that she will be competing in the Family Circle Cup held at the Daniel Island tennis center April 7-15. The field now includes five former World No. 1 players and the top player in the world. Combined the six women have won 26 Grand Slam singles titles.
Beach Tennis will be showcased at the Family Circle Cup April 10-13. Instructional clinics and professional demonstrations will be held. The sport is a hybrid that combines tennis and beach volleyball. Played on a regulation volleyball court, 2 players on each team use standard tennis rackets to hit a depressurized tennis ball over the net without letting it bounce.
Charleston’s only evening race will be held on the 19th. The Charleston Digital Corridor’s iFive:K will start at 6:30 pm at the Charleston Maritime Center. Limited to 500 runners and walkers, the event will circle back to a post-race celebration on the Harbor.
The streets of I’On Village will fill with cyclists on the 21st with youth and amateur bike races in the morning progressing to a final professional category 1 and 2 competition in the afternoon. A child’s fun bike and a trike race will precede the professional race. The fun doesn’t end there. This third annual event will bring over 200 participants together for a weekend of races which will conclude the following day with a competition at Hampton Park.
The Mt Pleasant Blessing of the Fleet and Seafood Festival will take place on the 29th of the month at Alhambra Halls. Two clergymen will individually bless the decorated boats as they parade by beginning at 1 pm. This is the 20th year that the captains and crew have been blessed to bring a prosperous catch and prayed over for their safety. The festivities continue all afternoon.
Charleston Race Week will be held April 12th - 15th. The annual premiere One-Design, PHRF and IRC regatta is for racing sailboats over 24 feet in length.
The East Coast Canoe and Kayak Festival will be held for the 17th year on the 20-22nd at James Island County Park. Spend a full weekend on technique, hands on experience, history and fun.
The 7th SC In-Water Boat Show is the largest of its kind between Annapolis and West Palm Beach. With 100+ boats on display and 120+ vendors, seminars and special events, the event will be held at Ripley Light Marina the 26-29th.
Bark, squawk, chirp or meow your way to Palmetto State Park for the sixth Pet Fest, a daylong festival for owners and their pets, on the 14th. Headlining the day is Disc Connected Frisbee Dog Team. One of the highlights will surely be the Lowcountry Dog Magazine’s Cover Model Contest.
Folly Beach opens the Historic DuBose Heyward House for the opening reception of the Island Heritage Festival June 28th. The festival honors “Goat” Sammie Smalls who was the inspiration for Heyward’s novel and opera Porgy and Bess. James Island will be the venue for 12 programs honoring island history and culture.
Plantasia: A Green Market for Plant Lovers will be held on the morning of the 28th at Gaillard Auditorium. The Charleston Horticultural Society’s annual plant sale will also feature the “Real Yard Sale” selling previously loved plants.
Earth Day will be celebrated at the SC Aquarium on the 22nd. It’s a Party for the Planet and will feature small ways that you can make a difference.
Charleston County has won an environmental award from S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control for its safe underground fuel storage. The fuel is used for county vehicles and equipment.
Google has fessed up. Maguro Enterprises has been doing lots of readying work on a 500+ acre site in Berkeley County it purchased in December. After months of cat and mouse, Google now says that yes, they are coming into the Goose Creek facility. More plans will be unveiled soon.
It’s rumored that Adidas is looking at the upstate. A Spartanburg councilman is reported to be furious that the identity was leaked.
