2007's List of Banishment Words

Speaking of lists, Lake Superior State University, the smallest university in Michigan, has come out with its 2007 List of Banishment Words: Apparently TomKat pushed them over the edge and they are banishing all combined celebrity names. Awesome has had its day. Gitmo, they say, sounds more like a fluffy feline in a Japanese animation that a prison and military base. They claim undocumented alien is like calling a drug dealer an undocumented pharmacist. The list goes on and on...

What a Boar!

The Chinese have declared 2007 as the Year of the Pig. Native tribes named this last full moon as the Full Wolf Moon, the next is the Full Snow Moon. After that we’re in the Pink, Flower and then Blue because there are two full moons in May. The term ‘once in a blue moon’ refers to this supposedly rare occurrence. Actually, it happens about every three years.

If this weather is too cool, head to Avondale, AZ where the average temperature in July is 107.6’F. The priciest homes are in Newport Beach, CA at a cool $1,362,500 median price. The most educated town in the US is Arlington, VA and if you’re looking for company, Bloomington, IN has the largest percentage of single residents.. You’ll find the youngest percentage in Jacksonville, NC

Check Out the Boats, Support a Charity

The 27th Annual Charleston Boat Show is set for the North Charleston Convention Center January 26-28. There will be 75 exhibitors and 29 powerboat dealers to tempt you. The Dorchester Boat Club will host the Dorchester Habitat for Humanity 5th Annual River Roast on the 13th.

A Weekend of 'Living'

The Coastal Living Travel Editor will be offering his insider weekend here in Charleston the 11th through the 13th. They’ll be at Wild Dunes with one of Golf magazine’s Top 100 Teachers. Cottage Living will hold a panel discussion on the Secrets of Shopping Charleston and Southern Living’s Food Editor will lead Savor South Carolina. Cooking Light’s Executive Chef will host a Lowcountry feast in the Riviera Theatre.

CSU Honors MLK

Dr. Martin Luther King’s Day will be celebrated at Charleston Southern University on the evening of the 16th by the Black History Intercollegiate Consortium.

Events at The Sanctuary

The Sanctuary will present a spirited weekend beginning on the 18th with the 3rd Annual Art and Antiques Winter Art Show. Also, there will be a Salute to Wine and Spirits Weekend. A ‘For Women By Women’ weekend will be held on the 25th. The 26th-28th is the Seaside Serenade Weekend of beautiful music and dance.

The First Festival of Camellias

Lowcountry Oyster Festival Coming Soon!

Two tractor trailer loads of single select oysters are rolling into the Lowcountry Oyster Festival scheduled for the 28th of the month at Boone Hall. That’s 65,000 pounds of the slimy, briny delights. It’s the 24th event that the Greater Charleston Restaurant Association has put on so you know it’ll be done right.

Wheel of Fortune in North Charleston

If country music is your thing, then plan on being at the North Charleston Convention Center on the 13th. Wheel of Fortune will be hosting the Country Music Stars Week with fifteen country music stars pairing with local fans and playing for charity. The week’s shows will all be taped the same day and air Valentine’s week.

Gone to the Dogs...

There’s a new doggie run in West Ashley thanks to the Ackerman family and the City. The .67 acre run at Ackerman Park off Ashley River Road is surrounded by a 5 foot vinyl chain link fence and has three access points, double gated to keep dogs safe.

East Cooper Montessori School is expanding with a two story, 15,000 square foot addition which should allow a 60% expansion of enrollment.

Broadband Service Expands

Surfing the net should soon be easier in parts of North Charleston and Hanahan. Bell South is rolling out new wireless broadband service to these areas that were previously underserved by broadband service.

Chamber Launches New Site

Berkeley County Chamber of Commerce has launched a new website as part of its strategy to promote the area. Berkeley County now ranks 13th in the state in overnight stays and is hoping the website will help boost those numbers.

Online Reservations Accepted

The more than 3,000 campsites managed by the South Carolina State Parks can now be reserved online. This will allow the window for changes in reservations/cancellations to go to 24 hours from 72 hours.

AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour

The Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island will be the host site for the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour June 14-17th. Over 150 of the world’s best men’s and women’s volleyball pros will compete in the Charleston Open which will be televised on the Fox network.

Daniel Island to Host Jr Cup

The 6th Annual SMASH Junior Cup will be played on Daniel Island Feb 23-26th. More than 400 regionally and nationally ranked juniors from 14 states will compete in the only tournament offering the top players a chance to compete for a wildcard into the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.

Get Ready to Race!

The 30th Annual Cooper River Bridge 10K Run and Walk is scheduled for March 31st. New for the 2007 race is the chance to run for one of six charities The event is capped at 50,000. Last year, 46,000 entries were received.

Buffalo Wild Wings Comes to Town

Buffalo Wild Wings, a wings and sports bar concept has opened a 6,000 square foot restaurant in Summerville. The Minnesota based company has plans to open another unit in North Charleston this year and one in Mt Pleasant in 2008. It’s one of the 10 fastest growing restaurant chains in the country. Founded in 1982, it has 410 restaurants in 38 states.
